IMDG 42-24: Regulatory Changes to the Transportation of Charcoal

Effective January 1, 2026, Amendment 42-24 to the International Maritime Dangerous Goods (IMDG) Code will introduce significant changes governing the transportation of charcoal. Specifically, previous exemptions from the Dangerous Goods List for charcoal have been removed, and a new Special Provision 978 for charcoal (UN1361) has been added, imposing stricter, mandatory requirements regarding declaration, packaging, traceability, and safe handling.

To enhance the safety of crew, vessels, and customer cargo, MSC will mandatorily enforce the specified IMDG requirements starting November 1, 2025.

To support customers in transitioning to these new regulations, MSC has prepared a summary document detailing the new requirements, which can be found in the attachment.
